I've always been compelled by certain athletes who just stick out more than the rest. They have something that sets them apart simply by just watching them play. Bo Jackson, Shawn Kemp, Barry Sanders, Manny Ramirez , Kobe Bryant and the list goes on. Even if I don't personally like ALL of them, I definitely respect them all and enjoy watching them play because quite frankly I really don't care if I like them or not I just want to watch them perform at the highest level possible(hopefully without PED's).
Now with Barry Bonds, he was always one of my favorite's BEFORE he was on steriods and he was definitely one of the top 10 players of all time even before he juiced up. Steriods just made him the best player ever without question.
It's a shame that Barry went that route because he really didn't need to but I can see why he did it because even I was personally pissed off at McGwire and Sosa for breaking the HR record, so I'm sure Barry was even more pissed than I was. I mean come on nobody sniffs the record for years and the McGwire breaks it by 9? That wasn't how it was supposed to go down, there was obviously something else going on there.
It's like if a whole bunch of decent rapper's albums got 5 mics and Jay-Z was pissed off because everyone was fawning all over all these other rappers and ignoring him, you would have to imagine that Jay-Z would try everything possible to put out a classic album. It's just because of the competitive nature and maybe a little ego too.
I really believe that by Bonds juicing up he was trying to create that classic album that topped McGwire and Sosa, who let's face it, probably aren't hall of fame quality without the juice.
Well it looks like Barry isn't going to find a team to play for this year and I can't say I blame any team for not picking him up. Too much baggage and he can't really do anything but DH at this point in his career.
So as Barry's career comes to an end I choose to remember Barry throwing his hands in the air after hitting a memorable HR instead of Barry's enlarged head, but I still think it's a shame we never got to see Barry finish his career off the juice. I'm sure he would have won some new fans towards the end if he had done things clean. Makes me respect Griffey JR and Frank Thomas even more and these two should get a proper sendoff when it's their time to retire.
