Duke's DeMarcus Nelson Goes Undrafted

DeMarcus Nelson joined the ranks of other high profile college players (Will Daniels, Gary Forbes, & Reggie Williams) to go undrafted in the NBA Draft. Nelson was one of the higher profile players for Duke over the past few years but never really lived up to his McDonalds All-American potential in my opinion.

Here is the scoop on DeMarcus Nelson going undrafted, via the SacBee.

DeMarcus Nelson, twice The Bee's boys high school Player of the Year, will have a hard road to the NBA.

Nelson was not selected in Thursday night's NBA draft and must earn his way to a training camp roster as a rookie free agent after four injury-plagued seasons at Duke.

The former McDonald's All American finished 33rd on Duke's all-time scoring list with 1,336 points. He was a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

Nelson participated in the NBA predraft camp in Florida last month, and he told the Vallejo Times-Herald this week that he had workouts with Charlotte, Dallas, Detroit, Portland, Toronto and the Kings.

Still, nobody called his name Thursday.

Before the draft, scouts questioned whether Nelson, listed at 6-foot-3, was tall enough or had the outside shot to play shooting guard in the NBA.

Nelson played at Vallejo High School for three seasons before transferring to Sheldon as a senior. He led the Huskies to the Sac-Joaquin Section final, in which they were upset by Kennedy.

Nelson finished as the state's all-time leading scorer and was third all-time in rebounding. He was named the Cal-Hi Sports Player of the Year as a senior

I have not heard any word on where Nelson will be playing during the summer league. I would imagine since he is a good defensive player, he may be able to stick with a team but probably would not see a lot of minutes. He could be a D-League type player for a few season.
