New York Giants Defensive End Michael Strahan has announced his retirement from the NFL today:
During his 15-year career, Strahan had 141½ sacks and made seven trips to the Pro Bowl.
In five years, Strahan will be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and he will make a convincing case to go in on the first ballot. He set an NFL record in 2001 when he had 22½ sacks. He was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year that season. (ESPN)
I believe that Strahan will definitely be a first ballot Hall of Famer because he is one of the greatest defensive ends in the history of the NFL. Since the NFL started keeping track of the sack statistic in 1982, Strahan ranks 5th all-time in sacks.
I figured Strahan would retire after the Giants won the Super Bowl because he was uncertain if he even wanted to return last season. He obviously made a wise choice in deciding to come back and play last season and since he won a Super Bowl, there is really nothing left for him to prove. I would expect to see Strahan doing some type of TV or radio now that he is retired because he has been one of the more entertaining players to listen to during his career.
