MLB Weekly

The Chicago White Sox have been on fire of late winning 6 straight games and now lead the AL Central by 5.5 games. The White Sox have been winning based on the strength of their pitching. Their pitching staff has the lowest ERA in all of baseball at 3.29 and sports an ERA+ of 132, which is phenomenal.

However, the offense is not playing as well and Nick Swisher is just one of many White Sox who have really been struggling at the plate this season. Beyond The Boxscore says that Swisher is hitting the ball hard and we should expect his numbers to reflect that soon. In fact, Swisher went 2 for 4 with a HR and 4 RBI against the Twins Sunday. He is still hitting only .221 though with 6 HR and 21 RBI.

Pedro Martinez made his return to the Mets last week and he pitched well. Pedro finished with 6 innings pitched and 3 ER. However, Pedro was not as effective on Sunday against the Padres, giving up 10 hits and 4 ER in 5 innings pitched. Oh, by the way, the Mets lost again and were swept by the lowly Padres. Things are not looking good for the Mets and Willie Randolph, unfortunately you can pretty much guarantee that he will be fired soon if the Mets don't start to turn things around.

Okay Red Sox fans, you can relax now, apparently the Red Sox are not interested in signing Barry Bonds. I really don't see Barry's personality fitting in well in Boston but I'm sure the fans would love him because he definitely would produce and that is all they care about. Of course this would only be an option if David Ortiz is out for the season due to his current wrist injury.

Very interesting observation about the Cleveland Indians again by Beyond The Boxscore, who say that the Indians are still contenders in the AL Central because all of their hitters have been unlucky on balls hit in play this season except for Grady Sizemore. Of course the Indians have been only 2 and 4 since then, but they still have scored more runs than they have given up 273-265 and their expected record is 32-30 rather than the 28-34 they sport right now.

In injury news, Detroit Tigers starter Jeremy Bonderman will be out for they rest of the season due to a blood clot that was found in his pitching shoulder. This is not good news for a Detroit Tigers team that is already short on pitching. I felt all along that the Tigers were going to have pitching problems but I didn't think they would be THIS bad. The Tigers pitching has an 88 ERA+, which is third worst in the AL. The offense has been better posting a 102 OPS+ but it has not quite been the dominant offense people expected.

After Joba Chamberlain's first start of the year, The Hardball Times tries to answer the question of how good of a starter will Joba Chamberlain be. Their conclusion is that it's still too early to tell how good Joba will be but they still give a detailed analysis of his first start. Joba looked better against the Royals on Sunday, pitching 4.1 innings giving up 2 ER and striking out 5.

Speaking on the Yankees, Dugout Central has an analysis of how the Yankees are at pitching to contact and come up with some interesting observations, including that Chien-Ming Wang will continue to struggle because he is giving up too many first pitch hits, walking too many batters, and falling behind in the count too often. That would certainly explain his struggles because he has not been effective of late.

Finally, here's a look at some starting pitchers who could be available this season.
