Bad news for Yankees fans as Chien-Ming Wang will have to wear a boot and be on crutches for at least 6 weeks after partially tearing a tendon and spraining his foot running the bases on Sunday against the Astros. I have heard that it could be at least 10 weeks though and he may not be back until September 1st at the earliest. Of course the big question is what are the Yankees going to do to replace such a productive pitcher like Wang?
Some pitchers the Yankees may consider acquiring are Joe Blanton, Rich Harden, Erik Bedard, Derek Lowe, C.C. Sabathia, Randy Wolf, Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla, and Paul Byrd. As expected the talk of C.C Sabathia going to the Yankees is really starting to heat up now. Now I'm not sure the Indians are ready to give up on their season yet and I'm not sure the Yankees are going to trade for Sabathia when they passed on a similar situation for Johan Santana before the season. I would expect the Yankees to try to fill the void internally for now at least.
Other teams that are interested in Sabathia if he was to become available, include the Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, Phillies, Rangers, and Mets. However, Beyond The Boxscore breaks down the reasons why the Indians shouldn't trade Sabathia. I agree that the Indians should keep Sabathia for now since they still have a chance to make the playoffs and Sabathia has been pitching great as of late.
With John Smoltz having a season ending and perhaps career ending injury, the comparisons between Smoltz and Dennis Eckersley have started to pop up. Personally, I feel that Smoltz has had a better career than Eckersley. Smoltz was definitely a better starting pitcher and he had a more consistent career in my opinion.
Here are their career stat lines:
Smoltz: 210-147 W-L, 154 SVS, 3,011 K, 127 ERA+, 8 All-Star Appearances, 1 CY Young
Eckersley: 197 -171 W-L, 390 SVS, 2,401 K, 116 ERA+, 6 All-Star Appearances, 1 CY Young, 1 MVP
After checking out the stats, Smoltz is clearly better because he also has more strikeouts and a higher ERA+. In my mind, John Smoltz should definitely be a Hall of Famer. Probably not a first ballot Hall of Fame selection but he should definitely get there at some point.
Now that Ken Griffey Jr. has hit his 600th home run, it is widely believed that the Reds will try to trade him. One team that keeps popping up in trade rumors for Griffey is the Tampa Bay Rays and Griffey has said that he would be willing to waive his no trade clause if the Rays wanted to trade for him. However, Beyond The Boxscore believes that acquiring Griffey makes absolutely no sense for the Rays because they already have some players who are just as productive and if they really wanted and upgrade, then they could try and sign Barry Bonds. There is also the possibility that Rocco Baldelli returns as a DH as he has begun to rehab in the minors.
Time to show Dan Uggla some love because he is really having an outstanding season so far posting a line of .285, 19 HR, 48 RBI, .365 OBP, .614 SLG, and a 156 OPS+. The Hardball Times also notes that Dan Uggla is on pace to become only the 2nd second baseman to hit 40 home runs and 40 doubles in the same season. Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby is the only second basemen to have accomplished the feat, hitting 42 home runs and 46 doubles in 1922.

Road teams have been extra bad this season posting just a .421 winning percentage through last Monday. The Atlanta Braves have been one of the worst culprits, posting a 25-11 record at home but they sport the worst road record in all of baseball at 9-25.
Dontrelle Willis has hit rock bottom and has been sent down to the minors to Class-A to try and regain his control.
In other Tigers related news, Ivan Rodriguez is going to be platooning with Brandon Inge at Catcher for the rest of the season. No surprise here as Pudge was starting to show signs of decline last year at the plate as well.
Finally, here are the details of the implementation of instant replay that will start on August 1st.
