MLB Weekly

You can add the Phillies and A's to the list of possible teams that might go after C.C. Sabathia if the Indians make him available. It would probably cost the Phillies a lot to make the move but I would seriously think about doing it because right now I think they have as good of a chance as any team in the NL to make the World Series. I also don't really feel like there is a lot of strength in the AL this year either, so by grabbing Sabathia they might have a good chance to win the World Series. Now they would probably have to give up their # 1 prospect, pitcher Carlos Carrasco, but if they could sign Sabathia to a long term deal then it might be worth it. I'm not sure that Sabathia would want to sign long term with the Phillies though because their home stadium is a launching pad.

Here is an excellent article from former Mets manager Willie Randolph who talks about his firing and how it all went down. As you might expect, Willie comes off as a class act and it is interesting to see his views of the whole situation. I hope Randolph gets to go to the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium this year so the Yankees fans can give him a standing ovation. I think it would be a great moment for Willie and I hope the Steinbrenners can make it happen.

Speaking of fired managers, the Toronto Blue Jays fired John Gibbons this weekend and in a surprising move hired back former Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston. Gaston managed to the Blue Jays to back to back World Series Championships in 1992 & 1993 and has a career record of 683-636. I'm glad to see Gaston is getting another shot to manage.

The Florida Marlins have been winning games despite some ugly statistical trends:

The Marlins rank last in the Major Leagues in fielding percentage (.976) and they have committed the second-most errors (65). Only the Rangers (68) have more errors.
The Marlins' starting pitching, for the most part, has labored to last six innings. With a 4.98 ERA, Florida's starters rank tied for 26th in the Majors. At the plate, the Marlins strike out too much, pacing the bigs in that category (621). With aggressive hitters, they don't typically rack up many walks. They've collected 229 free passes, 24th overall.

The reason the Marlins have been able to post such a good record this season is because they absolutely can mash the ball with the best of them, having scored the 6th most runs in the majors. They also lead the majors in home runs.

Looks like Curt Schilling's career might be over, whether he wants it to be or not. Schilling is going to miss the rest of the season after having season ending surgery on his right shoulder.

Another injured pitcher is the Cubs Carlos Zambrano, who went on the 15 Day DL with a minor right shoulder strain.

Tampa Bay Rays 2007 # 1 draft pick, David Price, was promoted to Double-A this week and if he continues to dominate the minor leagues, don't be surprised to see Price get called up to help out the Rays sooner rather than later. If the guy is ready, then they should bring him up because right now they have as good of a chance as any team to make the playoffs.

I mentioned a few weeks back that it wouldn't surprise me to see the Reds call up pitcher Daryl Thompson to help them out with some of their pitching struggles. I was all set to make Thompson the second feature in my Minor League Prospect Watch series and then the Reds brought him up without notice to face the Yankees on Saturday. Blew my whole plan, but RotoAuthority took a look at Thompson before his start against the Yankees. He ended up pitching well, going 5 innings and giving up 0 runs on 4 hits. Not bad for a debut.

Finally, Beyond The Boxscore takes a look at the Pirates offense, which has been a hidden treasure all season.
