NBA Draft Recap

1.) Chicago Bulls: Derrick Rose PG 6'3" 190 lbs. Memphis Freshman

No surprises here as the Bulls go with the hometown pick of Derrick Rose. The next move for the Bulls will be which guard they trade. My guess is that Kurt Hinrich's days with the Bulls could be numbered.

2.) Miami Heat: Michael Beasley PF 6'9" 235 lbs. Kansas State Freshman

So the Miami Heat actually went with Michael Beasley as the # 2 pick, the question is will he be staying in Miami? I say yes but we will see as the draft progresses. It could be that Pat Riley was trying to see what was out there for possible trades, knowing he liked Beasley in this spot all along. If Beasley stays with Miami, then I can't wait to see Beasley and Dwayne Wade play together.

3.) Minnesota Timberwolves: O.J. Mayo PG/SG 6'5" 195 lbs. USC Freshman

For the first time ever, three freshman have gone with the first three picks of the draft. No surprises yet either. I think Mayo is definitely the third best player in this draft and he should help the Timberwolves right away. Mayo and Big Al Jefferson on the same team should be a good tandem.

4.) Seattle Sonics: Russell Westbrook PG/SG 6'3" 187 lbs. UCLA Sophomore

I had mentioned in my mock draft that Seattle would probably take Brook Lopez but I also mentioned that Westbrook would be an option for them too. I'm surprised they actually pulled the trigger though. I'm not sold on Westbrook but I think he has great potential and the Sonics aren't going to be good anytime soon, so they can afford to wait for him to blossom. I'm just not sure he has a natural position in the NBA.

5.) Memphis Grizzlies: Kevin Love PF/C 6'9" 255 lbs. UCLA Freshman

Kevin Love is slimmed down but I'm still not sure just how good he is going to be. I don't think he will be a bust but the question remains whether he is someone you can build a championship team around. I say no, but I do think he could become one of the better players on a championship team, just not THAT guy.

6.) New York Knicks: Danilo Gallinari SF 6'9" 209 lbs. Italy

Well I was dead wrong this one. I thought they would go with a Guard here and didn't think they would pull the trigger on Gallinari. He seems to lack athleticism and I'm not sold on this guy one bit but he does have a high skill level. He is still very young, so it will probably be a while before we know for sure if he is going to pan out. It's been a long time since a European player became a star in the NBA.

7.) LA Clippers: Eric Gordon SG 6'3" 215 lbs. Indiana Freshman

I had Gordon going one pick higher to the Knicks and I think he is going to be a monster scorer in the NBA. I think this pick is a steal for the Clippers are #7. I guess the Clippers liked Eric Gordon better than Jerryd Bayless because Bayless is still on the board.

8.) Milwaukee Bucks: Joe Alexander SF/PF 6'8" 230 lbs. West Virginia Junior

After the Bucks traded for Richard Jefferson, I thought they might go in another direction with this pick but they most LOVE Alexander. I think Alexander is going to be a strong player in the NBA and he'll probably be in a 6th man role for the Bucks at some point in the season.

9.) Charlotte Bobcats: D.J. Augustin PG 5'11" 175 lbs. Texas Sophomore

This is a shocking pick and I don't understand it at all. This is no knock on Augustin but the Bobcats do already have Raymond Felton who is a decent point guard. I thought for sure that the Bobcats would go with Lopez here if he was available, so I'm thinking they are pretty sure they can grab a big guy with their 20th pick who is supposedly going to be Roy Hibbert.

10.) New Jersey Nets: Brook Lopez C 7'0" 260 lbs. Stanford Sophomore

This is a great pick for the Nets because it's a good spot to draft Lopez. I thought he was a reach to be picked in the Top 5, which is why I was surprised he was rumored to go to Seattle at # 4. Guess I should have listened to my own thoughts on that one. Lopez should be able to be in the mix for the Nets right away, joining Sean Williams and Josh Boone along the front line.

11.) Indiana Pacers: Jerryd Bayless PG/SG 6'3" 199 lbs. Arizona Freshman

Not surprised the Pacers went with Bayless because he is clearly the best player left on the board here at this point. The Pacers just traded for T.J. Ford but Jerryd Bayless is a deadly shooter and will probably see a lot of time at the shooting guard position.

Bayless just got traded to Portland with Ike Diogu for Brandon Rush and Jarret Jack. Bayless will fit in well with Portland where I'm assuming he will play the point.

12.) Sacramento Kings: Jason Thompson C 6'11" 250 lbs. Rider Senior

This is the first real shocker of the draft. Thompson jumps up big time here and we heard rumblings that he might go higher than expected. I felt Thompson was a sleeper in this draft but now that he has been picked this high, the expectations will be higher for him. I like the pick overall because none of the other top players really fell to the Kings with this pick.

13.) Portland Trailblazers: Brandon Rush SG/SF 6'7" 211 lbs. Kansas Junior

This is a solid pick for Portland and Rush fits in perfectly with the Trailblazers, who are slowly becoming a team to be reckoned with out West. If Oden comes back next season and plays up to the hype, you can expect this team to be in the playoffs.

Well, so much for Rush fitting in well in Portland because he was traded to Indiana for Jerryd Bayless. Rush fits in well pretty much anywhere so he should be solid for the Pacers but Indiana doesn't have as much potential to win right away as Portland does. I also like the Pacers picking up Jarrett Jack in this deal to share the point guard role with T.J. Ford.

14.) Golden State Warriors: Anthony Randolph SF/PF 6'11" 220 lbs. LSU Freshman

This pick is purely on potential but Randolph has a lot of it. Kind of surprised the Warriors went so young because I thought they would go after someone who could come in right away and play and it is yet to be seen if Randolph can do that.

15.) Phoenix Suns: Robin Lopez PF/C 7'0" 255 lbs. Stanford Sophomore

Congratulations Robin Lopez, you just became Shaquille O'Neal's whipping boy in practice. In all honesty, Lopez should help the Suns out down low defensively but it sure would be funny to watch Lopez looking like Sideshow Bob going up against Shaq in practice.

16.) Philadelphia 76ers: Marreese Speights PF/C 6'10" 245 lbs. Florida Sophomore

Speights has been questioned on his conditioning and drive but he has a lot of potential and this is a solid pick at this point for the 76ers, who are slowly building a strong and young group of talent. This pick has the potential to be a steal for the 76ers.

17.) Indiana Pacers, via Toronto Raptors: Roy Hibbert C 7'2",272 lbs. Georgetown Senior

I'm going to assume this pick is going to the Pacers as rumored and it's a solid one with the addition of Hibbert. Hibbert actually does have a similar game to former Pacer Rik Smits and I think he will fit in well with Indiana. Hibbert joins T.J. Ford, Brandon Rush, Danny Granger, Mike Dunleavy, and Troy Murphy, which is not a bad little team.

18.) Washington Wizards: JaVale McGee C 7'0"; 237 lbs. Nevada Sophomore

I had McGee going to the Wizards but I'm not sure he is going to be able to help the Wizards anytime soon because he is not very strong. Washington has been swinging and missing on big men for a while now, so I wouldn't be surprised if this pick is a miss as well.

19.) Cleveland Caveliers: J.J. Hickson PF 6'9"; 242 lbs. N.C. State Freshman

I don't understand this move by the Cavs at all. This guy isn't really going to help Lebron win right away and if the Cavs don't win then Lebron will be headed out of town in a few years. The Cavs also have a ton of bigs already, sure they aren't the best group of bigs but they are good defensively and I really thought the Cavs needed to add another playmaking guard at this spot.

20.) Charlotte Bobcats: Alexis Ajinca C 7'1", 225 lbs. French

This guy was a workout wonder and was projected to go as high as # 9 to the Bobcats but they grab him here at # 20. He looks extremely raw in the video and he is definitely a project, so don't expect much from this guy anytime soon.

21.) New Jersey Nets: Ryan Anderson PF 6'10" 240 lbs. California Sophomore

Somewhat of a surprise here that Ryan Anderson is going to the Nets. I definitely think Anderson will be a solid role player at the very least in the NBA. He is an effecient scorer and good shooter for a big guy, who should be able to be effective from the field without taking a high amount of shots.

22.) Orlando Magic: Courtney Lee SG/SF 6'5" 200 lbs. Western Kentucky Senior

Looks like Orlando got the guy they wanted, good size for a SG and he can shoot the ball well. He should step right in and help the Magic spread the floor even more than they already do with their 3-Point shooting.

23.) Utah Jazz: Kosta Koufos C 7'1" 245 lbs. Ohio State Freshman

A lot of teams were high on Koufos and most people thought he would go higher than this but he slid down to the Jazz. Good potential here but I wouldn't expect him to help out too much early on in the season for Utah.

24.) Seattle Sonics: Serge Ibaka PF 6'10" 220 lbs. Congo

The rumors were that Ibaka was going to fall out of the first round but I guess that wasn't true. Word is that this is a draft and stash overseas for the Sonics, so don't expect to see Ibaka anytime soon.

25.) Houston Rockets: Nicolas Batum SF 6'8" 214 lbs. France

The Rockets are taking a flier on this guy and drafting him just on potential. At this point there are a lot of proven college players who are getting passed up and it will be interesting to see where they land. I don't understand this pick for the Rockets because they need to improve now and this doesn't help them right away.

26.) San Antonio Spurs: George Hill PG/SG 6'2" 180 lbs. IUPUI Junior

This is a surprising pick here not because he can't play but only because nobody really expected Hill to go this high. I like this pick for the Spurs, who definitely need a point guard to back up Tony Parker and Hill should be a solid player for them off the bench immediately.

27.) Portland Trailblazers, via New Orleans: Darrell Arthur PF 6'9"; 215 lbs. Kansas Sophomore

Wow, Darrell Arthur really slipped in this draft supposedly because of kindey issues. The kid got a standing-O from the crowd though, so that's got to be worth something. Portland adds another quality player and this could potentiall be a steal of a pick for the Blazers. That team is going to be very scary if Greg Oden is really the next great big man.

28.) Memphis Grizzlies: Donte Greene SF/PF 6'10"; 220 lbs. Syracuse Freshman

Good pick for the Grizzlies here because he has a lot of upside and as we all know the Grizzlies aren't going to be good anytime soon , so they can afford to wait on Greene.

29.) Detroit Pistons: D.J. White PF 6'9" 230 lbs. Indiana Senior

The Pistons were rumored to have interest in D.J White and so were the Jazz. I've never been big on White but he does have potential to be a solid bench player. Not sure where he fits in on Detroit though, since they already have plenty of big men. Well D.J. White just got traded to Seattle so I guess he doesn't fit in with Detroit, makes sense.

30.) Boston Celtics: J.R. Giddens SG 6'5" 200 lbs. New Mexico Senior

I am shocked, shocked, shocked that the Celtics passed up Mario Chalmers, Chris Douglas-Roberts, and DeAndre Jordan to take Giddens. Giddens is a solid player but I am not sure how he will play in the pros. Interesting to see how he fits in with the Celtics next year. They have had success with drafting juniors and seniors though, so maybe Giddens will pan out.

31.) Minnesota Timberwolves: Nikola Pekovic C 6'11"; 243 lbs. Montenegro

This is a draft and stash overseas pick.

32.) Seattle Sonics: Walter Sharpe PF 6'9" 245 lbs. UAB

This guy came out of nowhere and ends up getting drafted ahead of some bigger names. This pick is headed to Detroit though for D.J. White.

33.) Portland Trailblazers: Joey Dorsey PF 6'9"; 260 lbs. Memphis Senior

Okay, this team is now officially loaded and scary as hell! If Portland doesn't make the playoffs, then I would be shocked. They are going to be a scary team for a long, long time.

34.) Minnesota Timberwolves: Mario Chalmers PG/SG 6'1" 190 lbs. Kansas Junior

Strong pick here for the Timberwolves. They might actually be a decent team next year with the additions of Mayo and Chalmers in the back court. This is a steal at this point in the draft.

Oops, looks like Chalmers is headed to Miami, so the Heat get a point guard to play besides Dwayne Wade after all.

35.) LA Clippers: DeAndre Jordan C 7'0"; 260 lbs. Texas A&M Freshman

The Clippers are the team that finally drafts Jordan. This is a great pick here because he has a ton of potential and is another steal. Hopefully for Jordan, he gets his act together and starts to show his potential.

36.) Portland Trailblazers: Omer Asik C 6'11" 230 lbs. Turkey

37.) Milwaukee Bucks: L.R. Mbah a Moute SF 6'7" 230 lbs. UCLA Junior
Mbah a Moute has a chance to be a decent role player off the bench but I don't see him being much more than that.

38.) Charlotte Bobcats: Kyle Weaver PG/SG 6'6" 201 lbs. Washington State Senior

Sleeper pick here for the Bobcats, he's good defensively but he needs to work on his shooting

39.) Chicago Bulls: Sonny Weems SG/SF 6'6" 201 lbs. Arkansas Senior

Great athlete with good size, Chris Douglas-Roberts continues to drop.

40.) New Jersey Nets: Chris Douglas-Roberts SG/SF 6'7" 200 lbs. Memphis Junior

The Nets finally pick up Chris Douglas-Roberts, who I think is a steal at this point and he should see minutes right away for the Nets.

41.) Indiana Pacers: Nathan Jawai C 6'10" 282 lbs. Australia

This pick is headed to the Toronto Raptors.

42.) Sacramento Kings: Sean Singletary PG 6'0" 184 lbs Virginia Senior

43.) Sacramento Kings: Patrick Ewing, JR. SF 6'7" 224 lbs. Georgetown, Senior

Surprise pick by the Kings here but I think it's a good one. Ewing, JR could be a solid player off the bench for them.

44.) Utah Jazz: Ante Tomic C 7'2" 220 lbs. Croatia

45.) San Antonio Spurs: Goran Dragic PG 6'4" 200 lbs. Slovenia

46.) Seattle Sonics: Trent Plaisted C 6'11" 240 lbs. BYU Junior
This pick is headed to the Detroit Pistons.

47.) Washington Wizards: Bill Walker SF 6'6" 225 lbs. Kansas State Freshman

If Walker's knee is healthy then this pick is a steal for the Wizards. Not sure Walker did the right thing staying in the draft but he should be able to stick with the Wizards. Walker ended up being traded to the Celtics, interesting.

48.) Phoenix Suns: Malik Hairston SF 6'6" 200 lbs. Oregon Senior

Hairston worked his way into this draft after looking like he was going to be undrafted. He is a highly skilled player who should be able to help the Suns.

49.) Golden State Warriors: Richard Hendrix PF 6'8" 250 lbs. Alabama Junior

50.) Seattle Sonics: DeVon Hardin C 6'11" 250 lbs. California Senior

51.) Dallas Mavericks: Shan Foster SG 6'6" 205 lbs. Vanderbilt Senior

52.) Miami Heat: Darnell Jackson PF 6'8" 241 lbs. Kansas Senior

53.) Utah Jazz: Tadija Dragicevic SF Serbia

54.) Houston Rockets: Maarty Leunen SF 6'8" 195 Oregon Senior

55.) Portland Trailblazers: Mike Taylor PG/SG 6'2" 190 lbs. Idaho Stampede Senior

Traded to the LA Clippers.

56.) Seattle Sonics: Sasha Kaun C 6'11" 246 lbs. Kansas Senior

57.) San Antonio Spurs: James Gist PF 6'8" 223 lbs. Maryland Senior

58.) LA Lakers: Joe Crawford SG 6'4" 215 lbs. Kentucky Senior

I like this pick by the Lakers and I think Crawford can make their team.

59.) Detroit Pistons: Deron Washington 6'6" SF 199 lbs. Senior Virginia Tech

60.) Boston Celtics: Semih Erden PF 6'11" 240 lbs. Turkey

Wow, this means that Gary Forbes goes undrafted. I'm pretty much in shock because he played great in all the pre-draft camps. I'm sure he'll get a look in summer league but definitely surprising to say the least. No Jamont Gordon or Pat Calathes either and I thought both of them were locks to get drafted. Will Daniels, Josh Duncan, Othello Hunter, Reggie Williams, and Brian Roberts all go undrafted as well.

1 comment:

  1. yeah, I thought Forbes was for sure going to get drafted. Calathes as well.

There's a good chance that some of these undrafted guys go on to have good careers in the NBA, they will just have to work a little harder now.
