NBA Draft Trades - O.J. Mayo, Kevin Love, & More

O.J. Mayo/Kevin Love Trade: Okay, what in God's name is going on? The Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies have to be two of the dumbest franchises in NBA history. Here is the scoop on the trade between the two teams:

Two league sources told ESPN.com that the Wolves have reached an agreement in principle with the Memphis Grizzlies that will send the draft rights to Mayo, Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker and Greg Buckner to the Grizzlies in return for the draft rights to Kevin Love, Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins. (ESPN)

Why would Minnesota trade a stud guard like O.J. Mayo away when he is the perfect player to play along side Al Jefferson. To top it off, they trade for Kevin Love, who is a similar player to Al Jefferson, which means Big Al will probably have to play out of position at center again. I do not understand this trade one bit for Minnesota. They do pick up Mike Miller but he is useless on a team that is rebuilding.

The Grizzlies on the other hand are equally bone headed here in my opinion because Kevin Love was the low post player they needed after losing Pau Gasol. I thought he would fit in really well with that team. To top it of for Memphis, they now have 4 players who can play point guard in O.J. Mayo, Mike Conley, Kyle Lowry, and Javaris Crittenton. I really hope they plan on trading one of these guys because if not then this trade makes no sense at all.

Darrell Arthur Trades: Poor Darrell Arthur slipped in the draft and then got traded 3 times before he finally landed with the Memphis Grizzlies. Here are the two trades that Arthur was involved in after he was initially traded to Portland for cash:

He was then sent to Houston along with forward Joey Dorsey, the 33rd overall pick from Portland, in exchange for the draft rights to guard Nicolas Batum, the 25th overall selection.

However, even after that deal was announced the Memphis Grizzlies acquired Arthur. In return, the Grizzlies traded the draft rights to forward Donte' Greene (28th overall) and a 2009 second-round pick. (Seattle-PI)

To recap, the Houston Rockets picked up both Joey Dorsey and Donte Greene. The Portland Trailblazers landed Nicolas Batum, and the Grizzles ended up with Darrell Arthur.

I love this trade for the Rockets because they pick up Dorsey would should be able to help Yao down low defensively. They also pick up Donte Greene who they had been rumored to be interested in. Greene has a lot of upside and I think he will be a solid pro. The Houston Rockets have generally drafted well in the past few years despite not having high draft picks, so I would expect these moves to work out for them.

Darrell Arthur ends up on the Grizzlies, which I think actually works out well for him now that they traded Kevin Love away and have about 12 point guards on the roster. He might get a chance to play right away with the lack of big guys on Memphis right now. That is assuming they don't trade one of their point guards for some big men.

Brandon Rush/Jerryd Bayless Trade: This was the big trade of the night before the O.J. Mayo for Kevin Love trade. Here are the details of this one:

The Indiana Pacers traded first-round draft pick Jerryd Bayless to the Portland Trail Blazers for No. 13 pick Brandon Rush, Jarrett Jack and Josh McRoberts. Bayless was selected 11th overall. The Pacers also sent forward Ike Diogu to Portland. (Yahoo Sports)

This is a pretty fair trade for both teams but I we have to wait and see how good Jerryd Bayless and Brandon Rush become before we can evaluate this trade.

Here are some other minor trades from the NBA Draft last night:

- Minnesota sends the rights to Mario Chalmers (34th overall pick) to Miami for two future second-round picks.

- The Washington Wizards drafted Kansas State's Bill Walker with the 47th overall pick, but he was traded to Boston for cash considerations.

- Seattle traded the draft rights of of the 32nd pick Walter Sharpe and the 46th pick Trent Plaisted to the Detroit Pistons for 29th pick D.J. White.

- The Miami Heat get a future second-round pick in exchange for sending draft rights to 52nd pick Darnell Jackson to the Cavs.

- The Seattle Sonics drafted Kansas Center Sasha Kaun with the 56th pick and then traded him to the Cleveland Cavs. Kaun will be playing overseas next season though.

- LA Clippers get the rights to 55th pick, Mike Taylor, in exchange for a second round pick in 2009.

- San Antonio Spurs get the draft rights to Oregon's Malik Hairston, a future second-round pick and cash considerations from Phoenix for the rights to Goran Dragic.

- The Chicago Bulls traded the draft rights to 39th pick Sonny Weems to Denver for the Nuggets' 2009 second-round pick.

- Portland sends the righst for 36th pick Omer Asik to Chicago for two future second-round picks.

- Of course, I already have talked about the Jermaine O'Neal for T.J Ford trade.
