NBA Weekly

The biggest story other than the NBA Finals this week is probably the whole Tim Donaghy situation. Donaghy, who is the ex-referee who has admitted to betting on NBA games, now claims that the league conspired with the refs to fix certain games in the 2002 and 2005 playoffs.

One of the games in question is Game 6 of the Kings-Lakers series in 2002 that featured 27 free throws by the Lakers in the 4th quarter alone. Since that game happened, there have been questions from both the fans and media as to what the hell was going on, so it is pretty common knowledge that people think that game was fixed and of course Donaghy is probably trying to play into the hands of that. It still seems suspicious though because I remember watching that game and there were some awful calls.

ESPN's True Hoop was able get a professional gambler's take on the scandal and he has some pretty interesting things to say. He also has some examples of games that he says he can tell were fixed: Knicks 140 Suns 133, Knicks 99 Heat 93, and Lakers 104 Knicks 83.

If you click on the links to get to the boxscores, you can see that the free throw disparity in each game is ridiculous: 54-16, 39-8, and 47-6. Definitely looks like they could be fixed to me, especially since the Knicks won two of those games against better teams.

Gilbert Arenas opted out of his contract this week and became a free agent but expect him to sign back with the Wizards even if it means he gets a max contract. Now I love Gilbert Arenas and everything he brings to the table but is it really a smart idea to sign a guy to a max contract who just missed almost a full season because of a knee injury?

I'm not so sure Gilbert Arenas is even a max contract type of player without coming off of a knee injury. Sure he can score in bunches but I don't think he makes as much impact on a game as someone like Chris Paul and Deron Williams does. To me if you sign a player to a max contract then he needs to be someone who can lead your team to a championship like Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Tim Duncan, Chris Paul, etc. and as much as I love to watch Gilbert play, I just don't think he is one of those guys.

Lots of coaching moves this week as the Bulls named Vinny Del Negro their coach, Joe Dumars and the Pistons are going with Michael Curry as their coach, and Steve Kerr and the Suns named Terry Porter as their coach. Interesting that all three of these guys are former NBA players and two of the three, Del Negro & Curry, have no head coaching experience at all. Definitely something to keep an eye on and see how their teams are playing next season.

Great piece here that SLAM Online threw up from one of their older issues of their magazine on Leon Powe back when he was a senior in high school.
