Orlando NBA Summer League - Day 2

Day 2 of the Orlando NBA Summer League is in the books so here are the boxscores along with a rundown of all the action:

Game 1: Miami Heat 90 New Jersey Nets 81

Notables:

Michael Beasley, MIA: 9 points, 1-13 FG, 7 rebounds, 5 turnovers, 7 fouls, 1 steal, 1 block
Kasib Powell, MIA: 17 points, 6-10 FG, 5 rebounds, 1 steal
Josh Duncan, MIA: 9 points, 3-5 FG, 3 rebounds
Mario Chalmers, MIA: 19 points, 5-10 FG, 9 assists, 2 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 turnovers
Anthony Morrow, MIA: 19 points, 7-11 FG, 5-7 3FG
Pat Calathes, MIA: 3 points, 1-2 FG, 2 rebounds
Stephane Lasme, MIA: 13 points, 5-6 FG, 4 rebounds

Chris Douglas-Roberts, NJ: 5 points, 2-3 FG, 2 assists, 1 rebound, 4 turnovers
Brook Lopez, NJ: 18 points, 8-10 FG, 7 rebounds, 1 block, 7 fouls
Ryan Anderson, NJ: 18 points, 6-15 FG, 4-9 3FG, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal
Jaycee Carroll, NJ: 5 points, 1-6 FG, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers
Sean Williams, NJ: 11 points, 5-8 FG, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 assists

Comments: Michael Beasley, Chris-Douglas Roberts, and Jaycee Carroll all crashed down to earth today after strong performances on Day 1. Beasley shooting only 1 for 13 is the most surprising to me. All around poor effort from Beasley on Day 2 as he also had 7 fouls and 5 turnovers. Mario Chalmers had a strong performance with 19 points and 9 assists. Marcus Banks better play well or Chalmers might be the starting PG for the Heat this year. Kasib Powell, last year's D-League MVP, continues to make a strong impression. Brook Lopez decided to grab some boards on Day 2 ripping down 7, after having none on Day 1. Ryan Anderson looks to have good range hitting 4 of 9 from three, after knocking down 2 of 6 from three on Day 1.

Game 2: Oklahoma City 100 Orlando Magic 77

Notables:

Kevin Durant, SEA: 22 points, 7-10 FG, 5 rebounds
Jeff Green, SEA: 28 points, 7-15 FG, 4 rebounds
Russell Westbrook, SEA: 19 points, 8-10 FG, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover
D.J. White, SEA: 5 points, 2-3 FG, 5 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block

Courtney Lee, ORL: 27 points, 8-14 FG, 3-3 3FG, 4 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers
Brian Roberts, ORL: DNP
Mark Tyndale, ORL: DNP

Comments: I don't even know why Kevin Durant is playing in this summer league, so it's no surprise he dominated today offensively. Same goes for Jeff Green, who poured in 28 points after shooting 13 of 15 from the free throw line. Russell Westbrook came through with a strong performance and again only had 1 turnover for the second consecutive game. Courtney Lee had a monster game as well and knocked down all 3 of his 3 point shots, which is what the Magic will be looking for him to do during the regular season.

Game 3: Chicago Bulls 89 Indiana Pacers 84

Notables:

Derrick Rose, CHI: 9 points, 2-9 FG, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 turnovers
Demetris Nichols, CHI: 16 points, 5-13 FG, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals
Tyrus Thomas, CHI: 17 points, 6-13 FG, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, 5 turnovers
Will Daniels, CHI: DNP

Stanley Burrell, IND: DNP

Comments: Not much going on in this game except that Derrick Rose continues to struggle, shooting only 2 of 9 from the floor. He did however have 7 assists and 6 rebounds but I would not be surprised to see him continue to struggle to score once the NBA season begins.

Here is some more coverage from Day 1 of the Orlando Summer League:

Michael Beasley: "I'd like to see him finish stronger," Askins said. "He has a tendency to go in with the finger roll. I'd like to see him finish over the top (dunking). Once he starts playing, he'll see guys are bigger and they're quick and they jump in this league - play above the rim. He'll get there." (Miami Herald)

"His basketball IQ is very high. He's very gifted. The game comes to him very easy," Heat assistant Keith Askins, who served as the head coach, said of the 6-9, 235-pound Beasley. "Our offensive package was very limited. If they had someone big on him, we ran high pick and rolls. If they had someone small, we put him on the block. And against the bigs, he could step off." "He probably said, 'Who is Tyrus Thomas?'" Askins offered. "He's used to being the best player on the court. And I would say tonight, he was the best player on the court.” (New York Post)

Derrick Rose: Rose summed up his effort: “Horrible.” “I was tense with the new players because I don't know how they play yet,” said Rose (3-of-8, 5 turnovers). “In the first half I was running more plays instead of reacting.” Rose was handled most effectively by Mario Chalmers, who try to re-enact Kansas over Memphis. “I thought I did a pretty good job on him, but it wasn't me against Rose. It was the Heat against the Bulls and the Heat came out better,” Chalmers said. (New York Post)

Russell Westbrook: Russell Westbrook was terrific in the first half, struggled in the second half but still impressed in the first game as his Oklahoma City entry lost to Indiana, 95-78.
Westbrook finished with 18 points five assists and four rebounds. The former UCLA guard who was picked fourth looks like a guy who can get to any spot on the floor. He's quick, super aggressive and he'll get to the line. He had his hands full though with NBDL player Earl Calloway who played a terrific all-around game. (

Jaycee Carrol: So who is Jaycee Carroll? “We like Jaycee. We like his game. We were trying to get a late second to draft him,” Frank insisted. “We fought very hard to get him on our team and we feel very strongly that he's got a bright future.”If he can score 22 every night like he did Monday…“I'm trying to show them that I'm a tough player, that I'm going to hustle every play and get some loose balls. I'm going to build to be part of a team and have a role. I'm trying to show I'm a smart player and I can listen and do what they want,” said Carroll (7-of-13 floor, 8-of-9 line). (New York Post)

  1. Thanks for the information. I've been looking everywhere for information on my white boy Jaycee Carroll. Northern Utah and Wyoming are rooting for him.

  2. No problem...he surprised me on Day 1 but he came back down to Earth on Day 2. I still think he has a chance to make the team, since the Nets head coach seems to like him.
