Orlando NBA Summer League - Day 3

Day 3 of the Orlando NBA Summer League is complete so here are the boxscores along with a rundown of all the action:

(Links for previous days at the bottom)

Game 1: Chicago Bulls 86 Orlando Magic 74

Notables:

Derrick Rose, CHI: DNP
Demetris Nichols, CHI: 11 points, 3-6 FG, 2 rebounds, 3 turnovers
Tyrus Thomas, CHI: 25 points, 8-19 FG, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 steal
Joakim Noah, CHI: 10 points, 4-11 FG, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal
Will Daniels, CHI: DNP

Courtney Lee, ORL: 13 points, 3-11 FG, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, 1 turnover
Brian Roberts, ORL: 1 point, 0-1 FG
Mark Tyndale, ORL: DNP

Comments: Derrick Rose sat out the game today because his right knee tendonitis was bothering him after he jammed it on Day 2. Not much else going on here. Courtney Lee struggled with his shot, hitting only 3 of 11 shots. Tyrus Thomas continues to put up big numbers but that is to be expected from someone who is starting his 3rd NBA season.

Game 2: New Jersey Nets 95 Oklahoma City 81

Notables:

Chris Douglas-Roberts, NJ: 20 points, 6-10 FG, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals
Brook Lopez, NJ: 22 points, 9-17 FG, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 1 steal
Ryan Anderson, NJ: 2 points, 1-5 FG, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block
Jaycee Carroll, NJ: 17 points, 6-9 FG, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 turnover
Sean Williams, NJ: 10 points, 5-7 FG, 4 rebounds, 1 block

Kevin Durant, OK: DNP
Jeff Green, OK: 23 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, 6 turnovers
Russell Westbrook, OK: 10 points, 2-13 FG, 3 assists, 1 rebound, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover
D.J. White, OK: 6 points, 3-6 FG, 5 rebounds, 1 block

Comments: The Nets look like they might have some decent rookies on their hands as Chris Douglas-Roberts and Brook Lopez continue to play well in the summer league. This doesn't mean they will play well once the regular season starts but it certainly is encouraging. Jaycee Carroll had another strong game as well and he may get a chance to make the Nets roster if he keeps it up. Russell Westbrook struggled for the first time today but he only had 1 turnover for the third consecutive game, which is encouraging because he has been protecting the basketball.

Game 3: Indiana Pacers 95 Miami Heat 84

Notables:

Michael Beasley, MIA: 17 points, 5-12 FG, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 4 turnovers
Kasib Powell, MIA: 15 points, 7-12 FG, 10 rebounds, 2 assists
Josh Duncan, MIA: DNP, Abdominal Strain
Mario Chalmers, MIA: 23 points, 2-8 FG, 17-17 FT, 6 assists, 7 turnovers
Pat Calathes, MIA: 4 points, 1-1 FG, 2 rebounds, 2 assists
David Padgett, MIA: 7 points, 1-1 FG, 3 rebounds, 1 block

Stanley Burrell, IND: 0 points, 0-0 FG

Comments: Michael Beasley had a more respectable game on Day 3 but still not as dominant as you might expect. Kasib Powell continues to play well and should earn a spot on someones roster. I wasn't too impressed with Mario Chalmers performance here for two reasons, one: he won't get to the free throw line 17 times during the regular season and two: he had 7 turnovers, which isn't good at all for a point guard.

Here is some more coverage from Day 2 of the Orlando Summer League:

Michael Beasley: "It's a humbling experience," Heat summer league coach Keith Askins said. "He came out and the thing I told him was, 'Let's see how good you are when they can prepare for you." New Jersey was prepared for him, and Beasley knew it - really knew it. See, the Heat inadvertently went into the wrong locker room before the game and saw New Jersey's notes scribbled on a board in their dressing room. "He saw everything on the board was about him," Askins said. Beasley often talks about how the game has always come easily to him; hence the "B-Easy" nickname, which is tattooed on his right shoulder. But not everything in the NBA will be a cakewalk, and if Beasley didn't know that before, he learned that lesson Tuesday. "Every part of my game needs to get stronger," Beasley said. Beasley is starting to learn another lesson about the NBA: Even in summer league, where the rosters are mostly composed of players hoping to be rookies next season, first-year pros don't get every call. Fouls have been a bit of an issue for Beasley so far in Orlando. He picked up three quick ones in Monday's win over the Bulls, and he heard plenty of whistles blowing in his direction Tuesday. He might play defense like a rookie, but he can question calls like a seasoned veteran. "When you get tackled on one end and touch somebody with your pinky finger on the other, it kind of gets frustrating," he said. (WINK NEWS)

Derrick Rose: Until Derrick Rose jammed the right knee that has been plagued by tendonitis and sat for the final 7 minutes 58 seconds of the Bulls' 89-84 victory over the Pacers on Tuesday night, the point guard had played all but 3:10. So much for bringing Rose along slowly, as management has claimed it will do. "Summer league is for Derrick," coach Vinny Del Negro said. "We're going to ride him." And the Bulls, aided by Rose's seven assists and three steals, rode a more physical, intense effort that included 14 fast-break points. Rose said he jammed the knee while driving to score on a layup but vowed to play Wednesday. "I wanted to push the ball more and run and get everybody going," Rose said. "In practice, coach gave us the details of where he wanted us to go. We just listened to him, and it worked." Del Negro added: "Obviously, Derrick played a lot more aggressively. We told him to make mistakes, have fun, get us in our offense." (Chicago Tribune)

Here's some more summer league news and rosters that were just recently announced or that I did not post a link for yet, including some notables players who haven't been named in my previous NBA Summer League posts :

Cleveland Caveliers: Summer League Roster Notables: Wayne Simien, Kansas

Richard Roby, Colorado: Colorado's Richard Roby will play for New Jersey in Salt Lake City's Rocky Mountain Revue from July 18-25. The Nuggets' Kenyon Martin, Roby's half brother, played with the Nets from 2000 to 2004. "There's no pressure," said Roby, who added a broken hand he suffered May 29 has healed. "I was undrafted. I've got to show my name should've been called." Roby's deal is for summer only, and he could sign with any team for next season. (Rocky Mountain News)
