Undrafted Free Agents - NBA Draft - Summer League - Part 2

Got some more updates on where some of the better college players who went undrafted in the NBA Draft will be playing in the NBA summer league:

Will Daniels, URI: The URI basketball team has player movement involving former, current and future players. The most noteworthy, for the present, is that Will Daniels has signed to play for the Chicago Bulls. He will head to Florida this week to play for the Bulls from July 7 to 11 in the 2008 Orlando Pro Summer League. (Providence Journal Blogs)

Interesting move by Daniels to try and make the Bulls squad. The Bulls already have a similar player to to Daniels in Andres Nocioni and they have a decent amount of PF's and SF's who would probably play ahead of Daniels, like Loul Deng, Tyrus Thomas, and Drew Gooden. Of course the Deng is a free agent and the Bulls are also rumored to be involved in some upcoming trades, so if some of these guys get moved in a deal that sends Kurt Hinrich out of town, then Daniels might have a shot to stick with the Bulls.

Brian Roberts, Dayton: Former St. John’s Jesuit and University of Dayton basketball star Brian Roberts, who was not selected in the two rounds of the NBA draft, has been invited to take part in summer league play with the Orlando Magic from July 7-11. Roberts, 22, a 6-2 guard, said he will undergo a physical exam Wednesday in Orlando, take part in a light practice, and then participate in a mini training camp with the organization prior to summer league play. “They called my agents and he thought this would be a good situation for me,” Roberts said of his representatives, Josh Nochimson and Jason Levien. “I’ll play in the summer games and then we’ll go from there.” The Magic are currently light at the point-guard position, with only veteran Jameer Nelson under contract with the team. Roberts said the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers also have invited him to their summer leagues. (Toledo Blade)

I think Brian Roberts has a great chance to stick with the Orlando Magic. Carlos Arroyo was their back-up point guard last season and it didn't seem like Stan Van Gundy was too fond of him. If Roberts plays well on both ends of the floor, then I can definitely see him making Orlando's roster and getting minutes throughout the season.

Othello Hunter, Ohio State: I swapped e-mails today with the agents for Jamar Butler and Othello Hunter. Though neither was taken in the NBA draft last week, both were picked up by NBA teams for summer league teams. Hunter will play for the Charlotte Hornets in Las Vegas July 11-20 and for the Atlanta Hawks in the Rocky Mountain Revue the week after that. (Dispatch)

Looks like Othello Hunter will be playing for two teams this summer. However, there is definitely a typo in this article above so I'm not sure if he will be playing for the Bobcats or the Hornets. He would probably a chance to make both of those teams, but I still think his best best would be with the Atlanta Hawks.

Mike Green, Butler: Former Butler University guard Mike Green will play for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the NBA's summer league, his agent, Buddy Baker, said Monday. Green worked out for 19 NBA teams before last Thursday's draft but wasn't picked. He had summer team offers from five teams, Baker said. The Horizon League Player of the Year led his team in scoring (14.6 ppg), rebounding and assists as the Bulldogs won a school-record 30 games and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Baker said Cleveland wanted a second workout before the draft, but Green's schedule was full at that point." Based on who is on their roster, that seemed to make the most sense," Baker said of picking the Cavs for summer league. (Indy Star)

Mike Green should have a good of a chance as any to make the Cavs roster this season. The Cavs have been looking for a point guard for the past few years and I still don't think Delonte West is the answer to that. Not sure that Green is either, but he will get every opportunity to prove that he is.

Jaycee Carroll, Utah State: After mulling over several free agent offers, the former Evanston High School standout athlete has agreed to join the New Jersey Nets. Carroll was scheduled to fly to New Jersey Tuesday, July 1. Jaycee plans to play for the Nets in NBA Summer League games at Orlando, Fla. next week. Carroll, a 6-2 guard, went un-drafted in last week’s annual two-round NBA selection of college talent. Jaycee spent this last weekend in Evanston as his agent, Brad Ames of Chicago, worked on getting his client an NBA free agent deal. Jaycee said three NBA teams – the Nets, Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors - all tendered offers. Carroll said he decided on New Jersey late Sunday evening, June 29. “We spent two or three days talking, negotiating, who is making the best offer,” Jaycee said in a telephone interview from Tremonton. “More importantly, which situation was the best for us, and would provide the best opportunity for me to become a player, a full-time member of that team.” Jaycee said Nets’ head coach Lawrence Frank was impressed with Carroll's workout with the team. Carroll said he could also opt to sign a guaranteed contract with another NBA team – if he can play well in the summer league and make an impression, if the Nets pass, and another team tenders an offer. New Jersey officials told Jaycee that the team feels he can bring a strong jump shot and toughness to the NBA squad. (Uinta County Herald)

Jaycee Carroll is a deadly shooter from long range, hitting 49.8% of his three point shots last season. He also scored 22.4 point a game. The question mark with him is his quickness, so I'm not sure he will be able to make it in the NBA.

Jamar Butler, Ohio State: Former Shawnee High School and Ohio State University basketball standout Jamar Butler certainly has plenty of options. Despite not being drafted in Thursday's NBA draft, Butler has been invited to tryout with the New Jersey Nets. In addition, he has multiple options with teams overseas. "It's not just an Italian team. There's teams in Germany, Belgium, Israel, Turkey, Greece, have all reached out about Jamar," Butler's agent, John Spencer, said. "We've got plenty of time. With Jamar's history and everything he's done at Ohio State ... I think he's set himself up pretty well for a nice little paycheck either in Europe or the NBA." Butler was unavailable for comment. If Butler sticks with the Nets, he could play with their summer league team, increasing his exposure. After that, his next step all depends on what the Nets choose to do. "If he gets an invite to go to training camp in the NBA in October, then what we would do is hope he gets the invite and get an out-clause on a European contract," Spencer said. "We're going to do is keep all of our options open and if he has a good opportunity to go to Europe and play, we always have an out-clause for the NBA." (Lima Ohio)

Jamar Butler might have a better chance to make the Nets roster than Jaycee Carrol but he also has quickness and athleticism issues. If he makes the team, I wouldn't expect much from him.

Brian Laing, Seton Hall: Another player who won a spot on the roster based on his workout performance. Laing played both forward positions for the undersized Pirates. Hyper-athletic (a 39″ vertical leap), Laing averaged 18 ppg in the Big East and has spent the last five months honing his shooting guard skills. Think Hassan Adams. (Nets Daily)

Bo McCalebb, New Orleans: The mock NBA drafts were right -- former UNO star Bo McCalebb didn't hear his name called Thursday night. But McCalebb will get a chance to make an NBA roster as a member of the Sacramento Kings' summer league team next month in Las Vegas. He had worked out twice with the team before the draft. "I'm not that disappointed," McCalebb said of the draft. "I sort of expected it. "But they don't have guaranteed contacts for the second-round people, and they've got to go to the summer league just like I do. I plan to be real aggressive, go out there and try to earn a job." McCalebb, the leading scorer in UNO history with 2,679 points, is projected as a point guard at the pro level. (Nola.com)

Still no word on who Davon Jefferson, Jamont Gordon, and DeMarcus Nelson will be playing for in the summer league.
