Demetrius Andrade Loses Controversial Bout To Kim Jung-joo

Andrade lost an 11-9 decision to Kim Jungjoo of Korea. He was so upset at the decision, that Andrade walked out of the ring before the decision was announced. "It was no disrespect for the other fighter, but it was pointless for me to be in there," said Andrade. "There's no way he hit me 11 times. I blocked him, he probably scored three or four points, but not more than that."

Why am I not surprised that Demetrius Andrade is getting robbed of a gold medal? Boxing at the Olympics is a joke and the judging needs to be revamped. I haven't seen the fight yet as it will be airing this afternoon between 3-7 PM ET on CNBC. It certainly sounds like Andrade should have won, so I suggest you check it out and decide for yourself. Don't let them get you down Demetrius, just turn pro and take it out on the competition. The city of Providence knows who the true Olympic gold medal winner should be.

Here is the story via USA Today:

Earlier welterweight Demetrius Andrade, the reigning world champion, failed to advance, dropping an 11-9 decision to Jungjoo Kim of Korea at Workers' Gymnasium.

Kim, bronze medalist in 2004, was no pushover, but Andrade felt robbed by the judging.

"Honestly, this don't make other kids want to come here or do this Olympic thing at all," Andrade said. "To come here and get treated like that (by judges) — what's the point in coming?

"The fights I've seen, Rau'shee (Warren) got robbed, Raynell Williams got robbed. I was throwing a lot of punches but (the judges) weren't giving me my points…..It's a shame how it happened like that."

Andrade fell behind 1-0 in the final seconds of the first period. The boxers were feeling each other out, twice being ordered to "box" by referee Hassen Boughalmi of Tunisia.

Andrade attacked early in the second round, tying the fight 1-1, but the Korean counterpunched his way to a 2-1 advantage. Although Andrade contunied to be the aggressor, Kim led 4-3 after two rounds.

The action heated up in the third period with the fighters trading punches. Each fighter slipped to the canvas in the first minute of the round, attempting to land effective blows. Andrade trailed 8-5 after a clean right by Kim but made it 8-6 at the end of the period.

Andrade's best punches failed to produce enough points from the judges in the final period, even though he twice sent Kim to the floor with punches and pushes.

Andrade, a 20-year-old from Providence, survived a tight 11-9 decision against Kakhaber Jvania of Georgia in his preliminary round fight, then routed Andrey Balanov of Russia in his second bout.

  1. Hes not the true Gold Medal winner, that will be decided later. He lost fair and square, everyone so far in this tournament no matter where there from has claimed to be robbed, its natural to not want to admit defeat. And if you havent seen the fight then why are talking like he was robbed?

  2. You shouldn't publishe a post before you saw the tape. I agree with anonymous. I saw the fight and it looked close but he lost. Totally embarassing and unsportsmanlike conduct to leave the ring like that before the decision.

  3. It was a close fight and the system being used misses a lot of punches that should count.
    HOWEVER
I as an american am ashamed he didn't shake hands and let the ref raise the korean's hand in victory. Prematurely leaving the ring after the loss was shameful and immature. Our relations with the youth of Korea are already strained. This was a terrible mistake. I am glad this youth didn't progress further, he was obviously not at the olympics to represent his country.

  4. I saw the fight and he definately got robbed. He dominated the korean beating outworking him on the inside. the only mistake he made was not boxing on the outside then he would have won easily. This olympic scoring system is bullshit we have been getting robbed in the olympics for years and it continues. You will see when he turns pro and you wont ever hear of these other fighters but andrade will be a worl champion.

  5. I have been in boxing for many years..competed, trained fighters judged. When you lose a fight fairly its easier to swallow and show good sportsmanship. Its a fact U.S. fighters have been getting robbed in the olympics for years Roy Jones, Holyfield, Mayweather. Should a kid train so hard for their dreams to get treated so unfairly and are supposed to say thank you? Fuck That! How about americans and other athletes being treated fairly? How about revamping Again! that screwed up point system!

  6. Thanks for backing me up on this. I think he got robbed but I'm also biased because I wanted him to win a gold. My frustration is with the sport of boxing in the Olympics as a whole though, not just this fight. The whole thing is a sham.

  7. Andrade's bout was very close, Im not sure if it was to the point where he was robbed, but alot of people thought he just pulled it out. The bigger issue you have to look at is the scoring system. There are are so many punches not counted. For example you will never get credit for landing a jab or a bodyshot, which in American boxing are punches that are really focused on. The Europeans and fighters from the Asian countries have the scoring system down pat and despite usally being slower and less naturaly skilled, they box very smartly and take advantage of the scoring system. If you look back at the Olympics prior to the computer scoring being used, Americans dominated as the way bouts were judged were generally much more suited to their style, and they would get credit for every punch including jabs and bodyshots. Roy Jones getting robbed was really the worst thing to ever happen to USA Amatuer boxing.(For those who don't know the scoring system was changed after Roy was robbed in Korea)

As for Andrade, he is an amazingly skilled fighter, with speed, power, and alot of experience for such a young dude. He will be up there with the greats of professional boxing one day repping Rhode Island, and Im sure his World Titles and millies that he will earn will somewhat help him earse his bad Olympic experience.

  8. Well Roy Jones still has said he was still upset about that robbery in the olympics and is something these kids train so hard for and should be judged fairly. Roy wasnt the only robbery weve had in the olympics and not just in boxing but other sports and hass been happening for years. Dont hate on Demetrius Ive judged many fights and I can tell you that andrade dominated the korean on the inside and the outside and if it had gone another round or two would have knocked him out. Close fight by what standards? in any other amatuer or pro fight people would say andrade dominated him. But by olympics rules "it was a close fight?" "Bullshit"
