MLB Weekly

Brandon Webb and the Arizona Diamondbacks are off to a great start: This team has really played well to start to season and is now 18-7 after Sunday's win. Pitcher Brandon Webb is 6-0 and he is just the 4th pitcher in major league history to finish April 6-0. Their offense has also been stellar as they have scored the most runs in all of the majors. This is definitely a team to look out for because they have a deadly one-two punch at the top of the rotation with Webb and Dan Haren and if their offense can continue to hit like they have, then this could be the team to beat in the National League.

Don't look now but the Tampa Bay Rays are the hottest team in the American League after sweeping a three game series with the Red Sox, they have now won 6 games in a row.

There is speculation that the Mets will release First Baseman Carlos Delgado: I hope that Delgado has something left in the tank. He has always been a great power hitter and I have enjoyed watching him play over the years. He is still not that old, so maybe he will come around. Unfortunately for Delgado, there is this analysis that was originally meant to show if Frank Thomas was finished or not but instead shows that Delgado is probably washed up.

Good analysis here on why David Ortiz is not washed up yet. It's way too early to start writing off someone like David Ortiz but this analysis gives some statistical reasons why he isn't done yet.

Bad news for Yankees' fans as Jorge Posada is headed for the DL for the first time in his career. Posada has been bothered by what was called a "dead shoulder" and has seen time at first base and DH this year in hopes that his shoulder will heal. However, he re-injured it after Saturday's game with Cleveland and could not even play catch on Sunday. There is no time table for his return right now but this is a big blow to the Yankees because Posada is a great leader at catcher for the Yanks and they will miss him.

It's possible John Smoltz could be following Posada to the DL as he felt some discomfort in his throwing shoulder and left early during Sunday's game with the Mets.

Gary Sheffield is still struggling with an injured shoulder and hinted at retirement if he suffers anymore setbacks. Sheffield was always one of my favorite players to watch hit because he takes such quick and violent swings and punishes the ball when he hits it. There is nobody who can replace Sheff's approach at the plate. It's funny that all these older players seem to be getting closer to retirement but somehow the often injured Ken Griffey JR. is still plugging along.

The Mariners signed catcher Kenji Johjima to a three-year extension, which has people wondering how bad minor league catcher Jeff Clement's defense must be. Clement who is an absolute beast with the bat has had his defense at catcher questioned and it is possible the Mariners might want to move him to first base.

Cincinnati pitcher Edinson Volquez is now 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA after pitching 7 innings and striking out 10 against the Giants on Sunday. I was big on this guy coming into the season and he has been impressive so far this season. I've watched him pitch a few games this year and his stuff looked powerful. His walks are still a little high but so far teams have not made him pay for that. Keep an eye on him the rest of the season.

Former Twins phenom pitcher Francisco Liriano was sent back down to the minors.

BeyondTheBoxscore has some analysis of some under the radar moves from some of the better GMs in the game.
