Frank Thomas signed with the Oakland Athletics today after being released by the Toronto Blue Jays earlier in the week.
Hopefully Frank Thomas still has something left in the tank. If he does then this is a great signing for an Oakland team that has gotten off to a surprising start, mostly due to their solid pitching so far. I'm not surprised Oakland jumped in on this because Thomas just played for them two years ago and was very productive and Oakland could use another power bat in the lineup.
Some other news from this week:
John Smoltz became the 16th player to record 3,000 strikeouts: I think Smoltz has to be considered a Hall of Famer at this point. Not only does he have 3,000 strikeouts but also 210 wins, 154 saves, and a career ERA of 3.25. Smoltz is off to an impressive 3-1 start this year with a 0.78 ERA.
Edgar Renteria & Orlando Cabrera don't get along: Crazy story about these two shortstops from Colombia, who apparently don't like each other too much.
The Tigers flipped Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Guillen in the field, so Cabrera is now playing first base. It's about time they moved Cabrera from third but I'm not sure 1B is a good place for him either. Time for Cabrera to become the DH until Sheffield comes back if you ask me.
Slow starters: Here is a list of guys who are off to slow starts to begin this season.
