Edinson Volquez continue to dominate and is now 7-1 with a 1.33 ERA. After his 8th start of the season, Volquez became just the 4th starter since 1956 to allow 2 runs or fewer in each of his first 8 starts. If Edinson Volquez is able to win the ERA title, he would end the longest team drought for an ERA title. The Reds haven't had a pitcher lead the league in ERA since 1944. Volquez has also earned the nickname "Little Pedro", in reference to Pedro Martinez.
There are rumors that the Indians could be looking to deal for an infielder and it's possible that infielder could be Orioles second basemen Brian Roberts. Baltimore would only be willing to deal Roberts if they are out of contention and right now they are playing well. If the Indians are able to get Roberts, that could be a big boost to their struggling offense and could help them take control of what has been an average AL Central so far.
The Indians have also been included in the list of teams that could possibly acquire Matt Holliday in a trade. The Indians could definitely use another big bat in the lineup because Travis Hafner continues to struggle and is just not the same hitter he used to be. I think they make the most sense, unless Oakland, Toronto, or Seattle wants to spend a little cash. I don't see the Yankees making a move unless they wanted to unload Matsui, which I don't think they would do.
Mike Mussina is having success this year despite his dropping velocity over the past threes seasons. This success is mostly due to his low walk rate and an increased ground ball rate.
Justin Verlander's struggles are due to his decrease in strike out rate and increase in walk rate and has been complicated by his velocity drop of almost 2 MPH.
A's fans are wondering if picking up Frank Thomas was a mistake because Mike Sweeney has been pretty productive when he has played and Thomas is taking most of his at-bats now.
There have been seven teams watching the progress of pitcher Freddy Garcia. The Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Braves, White Sox, Rangers, and Mariners have all been. I honestly don't think he will be an effective pitcher this season and any team that picks him up will probably be pretty desperate.
In this week's Met drama, Billy Wagner ripped his teammates for not being available to the press after a tough loss but then later issued an apology to his teammates.
SaberScouting has some good scouting reports on some top minor league prospects, including Rick Porcello and Deolis Guerra.
The Hardball Times feels that Dodgers pitching prospect Clayton Kershew is worth all the hype he's been receiving.
Not only is Lance Berkman raking the ball this year but he stole his 7th base the other night, which is 3 short of his career high.
In other Astros news, they haven't yet ruled out the possibility of signing Roger Clemens to pitch this season. Apparently, Roger will not go away quietly.
Suprisingly, Juan Pierre is hitting .444 with runners in scoring position.
ESPN had an interesting piece on the next big thing out of Japan, Pitcher Yu Darvish.
