MLB Weekly

The biggest news of this week is probably that the Yankees will be transitioning Joba Chamberlain to the starting rotation. BeyondTheBoxscore attempts to project what we can reasonably expect from Joba Chamberlain as a starter. The final analysis is that he'll pitch about 5-6 innings a game and have an ERA around 4.00, but I think there will be alot of disappointed Yankees fans if his ERA is that high. Either way, most people feel that moving Joba to the rotation will maximize his value.

I consider Mike Piazza a sure fire Hall of Famer after his retirement this week but there are some signs he may struggle to be inducted because he was not a good defensive catcher and he played in the steroids era. I have to give Piazza the benefit of the doubt though because he is far and away the best hitting catcher in baseball history. Also, here are a few excerpts about when Mike Piazza was establishing himself in the minors.

In injury related news, Fausto Carmona was placed on the 15 Day DL with a bad hip and Andruw Jones is going to have knee surgery, which will also place him on the 15 Day DL. Also, when he returns from the DL, Dontrelle Willis will be heading to the bullpen instead of starting.

Speaking of Detroit, here is a look at their toothless offense so far this season. The Tigers offense has exploded of late though scoring 12, 9, 9, 4, and 19 runs the last five games. Meanwhile, Matt Joyce has been a hit so far for the Tigers, the 23 year old outfielder has 5 HRs in his first 43 at-bats.

Willie Randolph is still catching heat as the Mets continue to struggle and it's possible he may have gotten the dreaded Kiss Of Death when GM Omar Minaya showed his support for Randolph this weekend. However, I have to give credit to David Wright who is supporting Willie and said the blame is on the players who aren't performing, including himself. Of course Wright is being a good leader and doesn't want to single anyone out, but he is really not one of the problems because he is hitting .283 with with 9 HRs, 36 RBI, and 7 SB.

The Dallas Morning News tries to breakdown the Edinson Volquez for Josh Hamilton trade, which has worked out great for both teams so far. Personally, I think it's too early to tell but so far so good for both teams at this point but there are signs that Edinson Volquez' low ERA will not last. That doesn't mean he won't continue to be very effective though.

Both the Red Sox and Yankees have no regrets that they did not trade for Johan Santana. As many have speculated, it appears that Santana is not as dominant as he used to be.

It's no surprise to me that the Padres have sucked this year but here are some changes they might look to make.

You may have noticed that the HR rate is down this year in MLB, and MLB is on pace to have 429 less home runs this season than last. However, it is still early in the season and the HR Rate is usually lower at this point in the season. Home Runs are only down .05 per game compared to this point in the season last year.

After Carlos Delgado, Geovany Soto, and Alex Rodriguez were all robbed of HRs this week because the umps made the wrong call, there has been a renewed interest in adding instant replay to the game of baseball. There have been rumors that MLB will try out the replay system in this year's Arizona Fall League. As I was typing this, Alfonso Soriano hit a ball off the top of the wall that was not a HR but it was ruled a HR by the umps. I think it's time for replay of HRs in baseball because if that's not a sign then I don't know what is. They are going to huddle up and talk about it anyway, so they might as well use replay to get it right.

I'm not going to sit here and pretend I know a damn thing about the upcoming MLB Draft but here are some thoughts on the upcoming draft from some people who know alot more than I do.

Finally, The Hardball Times has the 10 worst cleanup hitters since 1957.
