Boston 76 Cleveland 72: This was one ugly game to watch. Neither team played well offensively and some of the major stars in this game struggled badly. This game gave me ugly flashbacks of the NBA a few years back when the games were routinely in the 70’s. Hopefully the scoring will pick up as the series goes on but the one thing I do know is that neither one of these teams is going to be able to win Game 2 playing as poorly as they did in Game 1.
Lebron had a horrible game last night and the Cavs are lucky that the Celtics offense was not clicking because they really shouldn’t be able to stay in games when Lebron plays so poorly. He finished with 12 points on 2 of 18 shooting and 10 turnovers. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Lebron play that poorly.
Now the question is did the Celtics defense cause him to play this way or was it just a combination of an off night plus the Celtics defense. Well, I’m thinking it was a combination of an off night and the Celtics defense. I would imagine Lebron will play much better in Game 2 but I don’t think anything is going to be easy for him either.
The rest of the Cavs didn’t play much better except for Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds. I know Charles Barkley felt that the Celtics would have problems with Ilgauskus and I guess he was right. He could be a key in this series going forward. Among the role players, only Szczerbiak had a decent game, scoring 13 points on 5 of 14 shooting. Delonte West struggled shooting only 2 of 10 from the floor and Daniel Gibson was only 2 of 6 from the floor.
So how did the Cavs stay close in this game? Well, the Celtics offense wasn’t much better than the Cavs. Paul Pierce and Ray Allen both had miserable games as they combined for 4 points and 10 turnovers between them and Ray Allen failed to even score. The Celtics had 21 turnovers all together, so that definitely hurt them as well.
Luckily for the Celtics, the rest of the guys on the team played well, led by Kevin Garnett. KG finished with 28 points and 8 rebounds and he hit the go ahead basket at the end of the game. Rajon Rondo also played well in the first half and he finished with 15 points on 5 of 8 shooting, 6 assists and 5 rebounds.

Sam Cassell was huge off the bench for the Celtics in this game, in fact they may not have won this game without his play in the second half. Cassell finished with 13 points, hit two big threes, and did not turn the ball over in the game. James Posey and Kendrick Perkins also made solid contributions as well.
