I haven't seen this getting too much publicity yet but catcher Mike Piazza retired from baseball today.
Piazza, who is most certainly a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame, was one of the most popular baseball players during the 90's. He finished his 16 year career with a .308 career average, 427 home runs and 1,335 RBIs, while making the All-Star team 12 times. He also had an outstanding adjusted OPS+ of 142.
Piazza hit 396 of his 427 home runs while playing catcher, which is the all-time record for that position. He is one of only 4 catchers to top 300 career home runs, the others are Carlton Fisk(351), Johnny Bench(327), and Yogi Berra(306). Piazza was not known for his defense and will undoubtedly go down as the greatest hitting catcher of all-time.
